Spirulina: Miracle Food

Green smoothie time! These things are not just a trend, they are a great way to enhance your life by developing a habit of enjoying them on a regular basis. A lot of green smoothies got that way because they had handfuls of spinach or kale added to them, but another easy and wonderful way to get that super green aesthetic is just one tablespoon of spirulina.

spirulina-1829077_1280Spirulina is a dark green powder made of blue green algae. In just one tablespoon there are 4 grams of protein, B vitamins, iron, magnesium, potassium, & omega-3 just to name a few of it’s nutrients.

It also has the antioxidant phycocyanin that gives it such a potent color. Antioxidants help to prevetn oxidation which can help fighting cancer and are great for long term prevention.

Spirulina can help with fighting diabetes, anemia, cancer, and high blood pressure. Replacing spirulina with sugar and animal fats could dramatically change your life.

As an algae, it is also very good for the environment for more people to eat it. Compared to meat production it is very undamaging to the planet since it does not encourage deforestation or excessive water use to produce. The proteins and nutrients are still potent even with that lighter on the planet aspect.

It’s an easy commuter meal for working bodies too. It does not have a fishy/seaweed taste. If anything it is slightly earthy, but I’ve enjoyed it with the sweet/tart of strawberry and banana. You can also add some chia seeds and dates to the mix and pretend it is a big kiwi smoothie. Whatever floats your boat. 🙂
